Who news tends to come out on Wednesday after this column comes out for some reason. It happened again last week. http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/drwho/2003/07/30/6058.shtml 3 minutes, 32 seconds of film footage related to the lost Troughton story Fury From the Deep was discovered in a repository for discarded film. It is 16mm mute film footage related to the attack of the weed creature in episode 6. The news articles seem to indicate that the footage is mostly alternate takes, material that wasn't used in the final cut of the story. Steve Roberts of the Restoration Team indicates that the footage will find its way onto the next Troughton story to reach DVD, which is not as some fans assume a promise that a Troughton story will be released in the UK in 2004, merely a promise that whenever the next Troughton DVD comes out the Fury footage will be on it.
Autralian fans can see Doctor Who on the ABC Network http://www.abc.net.au/ starting Monday 15 September. Doctor Who will air 4 days a week in the traditional Australian 6PM timeslot just before the news. This is the first time that Doctor Who (bar the TV movie) has aired on free TV in Australia since March 1994. ABC is planning to begin with the Hartnell stories and claims that they will air the entire series. Unlike the broadcasts on UKTV since 1996, these showings will be commercial free. Due to the timeslot, some fans wonder if ABC will edit episodes for content reasons.
UK Gold is ramping up its broadcasts of Doctor Who. Starting Monday 11 August, 2 Tom Baker episodes will air weekdays at 6PM BST on the primary UK Gold channel. UK Gold +1 will encore the episodes at 7PM. Also starting Saturday 16 August, 2 Jon Pertwee episodes will air Saturdays at 5PM BST on the primary UK Gold Channel, 6PM on UK Gold +1, and 3AM on UK Gold 2. The 2 episodes will be presented as one episode, cutting out the credits between them. The movie format stories currently airing on Saturday and Sunday mornings (with slightly more erratic late night showings) will continue uninterrupted.
Maryland Public TV http://www.mpt.org/ has done an about face on its Doctor Who plans. MPT was planning to skip the Sylvester McCoy era and go to the William Hartnell stories. The Hartnell stories were to be presented in episode format, forsaking MPT's tradition of airing the movie versions of stories. Over the weekend, readers of the Washington Post noticed that MPT had erroneously sent out info for 2 episodes of The Sea Devils, a 3rd Doctor story. Meanwhile, on MPT's website, the Hartnell stories had been replaced by the Sylvester McCoy stories which logic indicates should have been scheduled in the first place. The McCoy stories will be airing in movie format. Based on MPT's new listed schedule and the fact that it hasn't pre-empted Doctor Who since 1998, the Hartnell stories should theoretically now begin on November 1.
As of August 6, it is 11 days until The Airzone Solution and Auton have their US broadcast premieres on KTEH 54 San Jose/KCAH 25 Watsonville, CA http://www.kteh.org/ . If they pledge well, KTEH has the option to air most of the BBV videos and sell them to other public TV stations. BBV's website is http://www.bbvonline.co.uk/ .
Richard E. Grant (Withnail & I, 10th Doctor in The Curse Of Fatal Death) will be the BBC's official Ninth Doctor in a fully animated webcast on BBCi's website in November, the month of Doctor Who's 40th anniversary. Check out http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/doctorwho/ for more details.
Dish Network subscribers in the Philadelphia area who get local channels through them can expect to be trading in satellite dishes soon. The non-major network locals (including WYBE 35) have required a special dish to view them at 129 degrees in the sky. Now they are being mirrored on the more standard 61.5 degree dish position, where new subscribers in Philly will be directed to get them. It will still require a second dish to see the Philly locals, but the dish will be able to access whatever services you subscribe to that are available at 61.5 degrees.
TELE 5 in Poland http://www.tele5.pl/ has discontinued its Doctor Who run again. They ran a random 26 episodes from the Tom Baker era.
Upcoming airings of the 1996 Doctor Who TV Movie:
Thurday 7 August 8 to 9:25PM - SA Sci-Fi Channel
Friday 8 August 5:25 to 7PM - SA Sci-Fi Channel
Friday 22 August 2 to 4PM - US Sci-Fi Channel
Wednesday 10 September 8 to 9:35PM UK Sci-Fi Channel
Sunday 14 September 2 to 3:35PM UK Sci-Fi Channel
Monday 15 September 11AM to 12:35PM UK Sci-Fi Channel
While I try to keep the column up to date, I do sometimes miss late changes to schedules. If you see TWIDW's information getting out of synch with what your local station is actually airing, let me know ASAP.
